FASA 2008 In Review

2008’s Fine Arts Summer Academies were double-dip delicious. Two locations, Raleigh, North Carolina and Memphis, Tennessee, were the settings for our rigorous program of artistic development. 2008 saw the introduction of a new paradigm of Lower and Upper Divisions for children age 3-10 and 10-college sophomores, respectively.

MINI-MUSIC FEST: Robin wrote an original musical, “Pennywhistle Park,” designed as part of a companion arts curriculum to teach the essentials of Violin playing as well as Dance, Voice and Drama. A massive set (believe me, we know) formed the picturesque background for the new production: a first in the annals of the Academy. Seventy children dressed in beautiful costumes, ala Mary Poppins and Oliver Twist, filled the stage with song and dance.

UPPER DIVISION: The culture of the early 20th Century came to life from the booming chorus of “Over There” to the inspiring peals of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Hundreds of students joined in a celebration of “The Greatest Generation,” a musical review examining the faithfulness of God throughout the changes and upheavals that shape a society. Participants learned a lot about the history of America and how it shapes artistic expressions. Among the highlights of the show were an explosive performance of the “New World Symphony,” killer arrangement of “Bonaparte’s Retreat,” and a soaring finale of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” with “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” In all, almost 350 students attended both camps, and performed twelve individual shows. In a fabulous development, the filmmakers of Franklin Films shot the two final performances of the Memphis Lower and Upper Divisions rendering two DVDs of Pennywhistle Park and The Greatest Generation for us to
enjoy. So keep an eye on anniemosesband.com for info on how to get your copy.

Plans are well underway in AMB Headquarters for FASA 2009 and hallelujah, are we ever ramping it up! We can tell you that next year is shaping up to be a gala event you don’t want to miss. So set your calendars for July 10-25, 2009, and watch the website for details. Many thanks to all of the artists, musicians, students, teachers, volunteers, and business people who have joined ranks to Make His Praise Glorious!
