The Week In Review: September 14-21

Another eventful week began for the Annie Moses Band in the fabulous setting of Statesboro, Georgia, a small community known for its hospitality and charm.  For those looking for a quiet getaway, we can give no higher recommendation than the Statesboro Bed and Breakfast where our hosts so kindly booked us for the night. After a delicious homemade meal of fried okra, mashed potatoes, rice, and stuffed flounder, we retired to beautiful and tastefully decorated rooms with all the amenities one could wish for. But no dream lasts forever, and the following Monday found us driving north to Nashville and home. Before us lay a rigorous schedule of recording, meetings, performances, and photo shoots. What else does a band do?

Tuesday saw our return to the studio, recording our new Spring release,  Make His Praise Glorious. That particular day we delved into the task of tracking strings. As for the songs we were recording… that’s for us to know and you to find out. ;)

Wednesday dawned on what is arguably the most difficult, arduous, and back breaking task of artistry: photo shoots. This particular session took place out of doors, and thanks be to God, the weather was beautiful and breezy. We divided our time between an idyllic Londonesque town suburb that was so lovely as to make one seriously wonder at the financial status of its inhabitants (not to mention the standards of yard work involved), and the venerable estate of Cheekwood, so long a landmark of the Nashville area.

Dressed as we were in clothing that should only be exposed in controlled conditions, we found ourselves obliged to move gingerly from rock to rock and pathway to pathway in order to avoid any unsightly memorabilia. Cheekwood gave us some respite with its stone balconies and shorn grass. One beautiful spot in particular caught our eye. A little pool, surrounded by two parallel stone staircases, rippled with water from a fountain on the second floor. Green moss covered the stone wall, and a peculiar egg shaped stone formed the centerpiece of the display. Commenting on whether or not the stone might be removed Indiana Jones-style, my brother, the audacious fellow, climbed the steps to the second floor, and unknowingly turned some lever that increased the water flow from a trickle to a pour. After this, we quietly left the pool it its own devices.

But that was not the only pool with strange characteristics. Below us, at the bottom of the balcony, stood another pond filled with vegetation. Goldfish of various shapes and sizes swam within its confines. One goldfish in particular, wowed us with its impressive girth. Alex commented on how its size was most likely due to the scope of the pond. Beckoning to one of our friendly neighborhood Reunion reps, he said, “You should see this goldfish. It’s huge.”

The rep, a good man by the name of Tim, smiled. “I’ll see it later.”

“You will…” came the ominous reply (we still don’t know what he meant).

But enough about the photo shoot. Thursday was the date of our CAA showcase in which the Annie Moses Band was scheduled to impress the socks off of a slew of festival agents. Did we succeed? That, my friends, remains to be seen.

Friday proved the most dangerous day of all, as half of our clan returned to the studio to continue work on Make His Praise Glorious, and my father and I went on a desperate raid for gasoline. Some of you no doubt heard that our poor out of the way city of Brentwood was experiencing gas shortages, and we were certainly in the thick of it. A couple of near misses served to get my blood pumping (people can be fairly ruthless in these kind of situations). After several rebuffs, we finally made it to a gas station that was not totally infested or out of gas. Several hours later (and several prayers too) we left the station with full tanks, and a new respect for the fragility of our easy lifestyles.

And that’s the Week in Review….
