And it couldn’t have finished on a better note. Our week (with change) in Memphis was a ride from beginning to end, one filled with talented young musicians and performers. The final show(s) were the best we’ve ever put into production. Pennywhistle Park, our mother’s creative musical for small children, came to life with spectacular costumes (seemingly lifted from the set of My Fair Lady and Mary Poppins), stunning vocals from children ranging in age from 6 to 9, interpretive dance (the good kind), and outstanding string playing. As for the Upper Division, The Greatest Generation came off splendidly. Dancing of every variety, bluegrass, classical, jazz, blues guitar, pop opera, and dramatic displays from such luminaries as Billy Sunday, Susan B. Anthony, Vivien Leigh, Bob Hope, Jimmy Stewart, Judy Garland, and John Wayne, filled the evening with excitement, conviction, entertainment, and laughter. And the best part of all is: this FASA was professionally filmed! The moment we knew something special was in the making was when the jib camera came down to capture, for all generations to come, the famous slow motion run to the Chariots of Fire theme. It moved from the front of the runners, slowly transitioned to a side perspective and followed them off the stage. Now that’s good camera work. Thanks to all the people who have made both of these FASAs, in Raleigh and Memphis, such wonderful experiences. Every year is a challenge that ends in a breathtaking reward from the hand of the Almighty. We are blessed each year to see people from across the country join us in the vision of seeing the arts reclaimed fro the glory of God, and then watching as He takes our meagre efforts and actually makes them worth something in the end. And what results is something only He could have imagined. BTW, if you don’t know what the hullaballoo is a about, head over to the Fine Arts page of the AMB website and read more. And remember to mark your calendars for next summer…
